What are the working hours?

Working hours are from 8am to 12 noon and 2pm to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

What kind of work do the volunteers do?

Volunteers carry out a variety of tasks. For more details check out the volunteer activities page.

How much money will I need for a week?

Utila is fairly cheap compared to the States and Europe. For more details of spending take a look at the costs page

What is the nightlife like on Utila?

Utila has a large number of bars and restaurants which are open until the early hours of the morning. There is also a small cinema which shows the latest releases.

Roughly how many volunteers are there at once?

A maximum of 12 people can volunteer at the station at one time. Usually there are between 6 and 10 volunteers at the station.

What sort of clothes should I bring?

Please take a look at the equipment page for a list of suggested clothes.

Are there any dangerous animals/creatures on the island?

There are no venimous snakes and no lethal spiders on the island.

How long should I volunteer for?

We require that volunteers are here for a minimum of three weeks, but you can volunteer for as long as you like.

What other activities can I do on the island?

Utila is one of the best places for diving in the Caribbean. Station volunteers can do their Open Water Diving course at a reduced price as part of an agreement between the Station and Utila Water Sports. There are also a number of public beaches. You can go horse riding, parasailing and snorkeling and on whale shark safaris.

Where will I stay during my time as a volunteer?

You will stay at the iguana station, which has living accommodation for 12 people in rooms that sleep 2 to 4 people. Your accommodation at the station is included in your volunteering fee, but the fee does not include any meals.

What facilities are available at the station?

There is a fully equipped kitchen. There are two toilets and two showers (cold water only but it is too hot for a hot shower anyway!). The volunteers can also use the washing machine and the station's bike. If you bring a laptop you can connect to the internet at the station, although there are a number of pretty cheap internet providers in the town.

Do I need any vaccinations for my time in Honduras?

We cannot provide you with medical advice, but you will need some vaccinations for your stay in Utila. We recommend you seek medical advice in your home country in respect of vaccinations.

Do I need to take malaria medication?

We cannot provide you with medical advice, but you may wish to take anti-malarials. We recommend you seek medical advice in your home country in respect of malaria medication.

What is the average age of volunteers?

We have volunteers of all ages, from 18 to 70. The minimum age for a volunteer is 18 years.

Do I need to speak Spanish to work at the station?

You do not need to speak Spanish to work at the station as the staff all speak English. English is widely spoken on Utila. However, it is cheap to learn Spanish on the island, therefore you may wish to take lessons.

Do I need a visa for Honduras?

You will need a visa for Honduras. Check the costs page for more information.

Will somebody meet me at the airport/ferry dock?

We can arrange for someone to meet you when you arrive on Utila. Just let us know which ferry/flight you will be on.

Can I carry out my own research at the station?

We welcome any volunteers who wish to conduct their own research on the island. Please contact the station director to discuss this further.
